On 3 September 1998, US President Bill Clinton and US First Lady Hillary Clinton arrived in Northern Ireland to join UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife, Cherie Blair, on a tour of the country. Nearly six months after the signing of the Belfast Agreement (also known as the Good Friday Agreement), Clinton sought to impress on the people of Northern Ireland that they should not let the chance of peace slip away. His message was of particular importance coming only two weeks after the killing of 29 people in a bomb attack in the town of Omagh in County Tyrone. Carried out the Real IRA, a splinter group opposed to the peace, the attack saw an outpouring of anger across the communities of Northern Ireland. Many of Clinton's speeches during the visit aimed to help channel that anger into a strengthened commitment to end the decades-long cycle of tit-for-tat violence. An event held at Waterfront Hall in Belfast saw Clinton share a stage with Blair while paying tribute to the signatories of the Belfast Agreement. He thanked Senator George Mitchell, the US Special Envoy for Northern Ireland who chaired the peace talks, as well as Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Féin and alleged former commander in the Provisional IRA, for his commitment to peace. Clinton shook hands with Adams as well as Martin McGuinness, himself formerly a senior member of the Provisional IRA and an instrumental participant in the Northern Ireland peace process. #BillClinton #TonyBlair #BertieAhern #HillaryClinton #GerryAdams #CherieBlair #GeorgeMitchell #GoodFriday #Belfast #NorthernIreland #IRA #TheTroubles #Peace To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/footage... 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - / @itnarchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - / itnarchive 🎥 Like us on Facebook - / itnarchiveitnp 🎥 Check out our TikTok - / itnarchive1955
