WATCH: The racist history behind Georgia’s runoff elections

On Dec. 6, two Black candidates, Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker will go head to head in a runoff election to determine which of them will represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate. But, the majority voting law that triggers a runoff is a vestige of racist legislation in Georgia that “makes it more difficult for any group which forms a minority in the population to elect its candidates of choice,” regardless of the candidates’ ethnicity, historian and California Institute of Technology professor Morgan Kousser told the PBS NewsHour’s Nicole Ellis in an interview this month. This video was produced by Casey Kuhn, Yasmeen Alamiri and Julia Griffin.
