Herzberg was a psychologist who disagreed with Taylor's scientific management theory that money was the only motivator. Herzberg believed that there were two factors that affected employee motivation: motivators and hygiene factors. Motivators are factors that actually motivate people to work hard. These include giving employees more responsibility, designing jobs that are challenging and rewarding, and recognizing achievement. Hygiene factors, on the other hand, are factors that, if absent, will demotivate employees. These include things like pay, working conditions, and company policies. Herzberg argued that both motivators and hygiene factors are important for employee motivation. Managers need to make sure that hygiene factors are met so that employees are not demotivated, but they also need to focus on motivators to get the best performance out of their employees. Two specific motivators that Herzberg supported are job enrichment and empowerment. Job enrichment is giving employees a job with more depth and variety. Empowerment is giving employees more control over their work. Herzberg believed that both of these factors can lead to increased employee motivation.
