Improving your Speed and Control in English-Style Knitting

Hello Knitters! There are many ways to knit, and none of them is 'right' or 'wrong'. Within those ways of knitting, each knitter has her own way of holding the needles and wrapping the yarn around her fingers. In this video, I demonstrate my personal wrapping technique, and I also talk about the position of the needle in the right hand and how it relates to the speed of knitting. Update: There have been a few comments with queries about holding the needle like a pencil when there are a lot of stitches on the needle, or the knitted fabric is long. All you have to do is place the work in the space between your thumb and index finger and continue knitting as usual. Another update: I made this video years ago and have since learned how to knit in the continental style of picking rather than throwing, and I choose to knit almost exclusively in that style now. However, I do use the English technique (throwing) when I work with very fine yarns (cobweb weight) or when there is a tricky lace pattern, as well as for cast-off edges, as I feel that I can manipulate the yarn better in those situations. Also, I work fair-isle patterns with one strand of yarn in each hand, as I can keep my tension consistent more easily that way. So, please, before you bad-mouth a particular style of knitting, remember that each technique has its advantages and disadvantages, and we can each choose to knit in a way that suits us individually. Happy knitting!
