This is a must-read for all parents. Hands down, this is the best parenting book I have ever read- and I have read a ton. In "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness", Jonathan Haidt talks about how social media has caused a mental health epidemic- especially among young girls. Haidt discusses the differences between a phone-based childhood and a play-based (or free range) childhood- the latter is something that existed prior to the late 1980s. Haidt calls Gen Z (those born after 1996) a coddled generation of kids that don't know how to handle disappointment and hurt feelings, and that have grown up being told the world is a dangerous place. He discusses the perils of helicopter parenting and the lack of enforceable age minimums on social media. The result? Anxious kids with mental health issues that are unable to face the world confidently.
