Since the Beginner Farmer Training Program (BFTP) launched 102years ago, we have trained 400+ new farmers across the Chesapeake region in sustainable and regenerative practices. The BFTP provides a full year of FREE training to new farmers, ensuring that no farmer is ever turned away for lack of funds. On top of this, we distribute thousands of dollars directly to limited-resource farmers each year in the form of needs-based, farm startup mini-grants. This year, we had our largest trainee class to date: 80 incredible new farmers (up from just 13 trainees in 2015)! This is a huge step toward our goal of a new farmer workforce well trained in practices that are profitable, protect our water, land, and climate, and provide healthy food for our region’s communities. The need for new, climate smart farmers has never been greater and the good news is that young people and second careerists are answering the call. Demand for the BFTP has never been greater, however, the costs of operating a free program are high and due to limited funds, we had to turn away more than 100 applicants. We need your support to train the next generation of Chesapeake farmers and set them up for successful, climate smart farming. Named after the BFTP’s founders Cathy Tipper (Roberts Roost Farm) and Jack and Beckie Gurley (Calvert’s Gift Farm), the Tipper-Gurley Fund for New Farmers supports our work in providing free access to critical training for our region’s future farmers.
