60 Minute Vinyasa Flow - Heart Opening / Backbending

This is a 60 minute vinyasa flow class focussed on heart opening and backbending postures culminating with Wheel Pose (Urdhva Danurasana). Class moves intelligently through a sequence of postures to progressively mobilise the shoulders, open the front of your body, warm your spine and activate your core so you feel open and spacious in this more challenging backbend. Having said that and if you're anything like me and find backbending requires a good dose of WD40, I have also included some gentler variations along the way so you can experience the enlivening side effects of bending backwards. Class begins by inviting your spine to move through its full range of motion - lateral side bends, twists, flexion and extension. We establish a breathing pattern to support you as you move and connect you to your abdominal core to help support your low back. Class progresses with shoulder openers, some abdominal core work and hip opening standing sequences. Step by step, we start to sprinkle in some optional deeper backbends as we move... cobra peels, upward facing dog, 1/2 bow variation, dancer's pose, flip dog, dynamic bridge and then our peak pose, Urdhva Danurasana. I demonstrate this pose with the use of 4 blocks (as I'm nurturing a shoulder injury and don't bend that easily :-) It's a great option if you're feeling warm and ready to try it. Of course, if you're confident to lift up more effortlessly.....enjoy! The only prop that I would recommend for class is a rolled up blanket in the shape of a sausage! And, as always....please move in your own safe range of motion.
