Star stitch (variation 1): a Knittycat's Knits tutorial

Video tutorial on how to knit the Star stitch (sometimes also known as the Knotty stitch; traditional stitch pattern); there are several different types of Star stitches and this is just 1 variation (hope to post additional variations in upcoming videos). Tips for knitting this stitch are to keep a very loose tension, using needles that have pointy tips and using a size bigger than the usual size used for the yarn. Level: Advanced Beginner or Intermediate Abbreviations: K=knit; K3togtbl, YO, K3togtbl=knit 3 stitches together through the back loop, without throwing off the stitches on left needle do a yarn over, then knit through the back loop of those same 3 stitches again, then throw off the stitches on the left needle; P=purl; st=stitch. The pattern is a 6-row repeat, knit on a multiple of 3 sts. Cast on a multiple of 3 sts (eg, 15, 18, 21, etc) Rows 1, 3, & 5: Purl all sts Row 2: K1, *[K3togtbl, YO, K3togtbl]. Repeat from * until the last 2 sts, then K2. Row 4: K2, *[K3togtbl, YO, K3togtbl]. Repeat from * until the last st, then K1. Row 6: K3, *[K3togtbl, YO, K3togtbl]. Repeat from * until the last 3 sts, then K3. Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern. To knit a cowl using this pattern, first determine the gauge by knitting a small sample (at least about 2 inches in height) using the yarn & needles you wish to use for the project. Once you have the gauge, you can decide to knit your cowl in one of the following ways: 1. Lengthwise: Cast on the number of sts for the length of cowl, knit to the desired height/width, then cast off sts, and seam the edges to join the cowl (link to video on seaming edges:    • How to seam knitted edges: a Knittyca...  ) 2. Width-wise: Cast on the number of stitches desired for the height/width of the cowl (usually 6-8 inches); suggest using a provisional cast on for this (link to provisional cast on video:    • How to knit a provisional cast on: a ...  ). Then knit the pattern until the cowl is at the desired length. Then pick back up the stitches from the provisional cast on and join them to the live stitches (at the other end of the cowl) using the Kitchener stitch (link to Kitchener st video:    • How to do the Kitchener stitch: a Kni...  ) If you try this pattern for a project, do leave me a comment in the Comments box to tell how it went. Thanks for watching!
