I didn't want to get too verbally technical so I'll leave some more detailed thoughts below. I'm using the Metabones Speedbooster .71x EF - XF so I'm getting 1.07x crop, which is essentially full frame, though the 28mm fov (18mm APSC) actually ends up being around 20mm APSC. A better comparison might be a FF and APSC lens with equivalent focal lengths but unfortunately Zeiss doesn't make a 40mm FF lens and other lenses would of course have completely different contrast and overall look. The reason I didn't opt for the Cine version speedbooster was because of 3 reasons. I don't use follow focus, I just use my hands (i am a weird handheld purist) so i dont need the super tight lock (the normal version locks fine for general use). The non-cine version only requires one hand to change lenses, which is useful for run and gun. Finally, the price and ergonomics. The locking mechanism on the cine version crowds finger space near the grip, making it uncomfortable. For cropped look I use the Fringer Pro 2 adapter, which actually serves as an extension tube, which is super useful for macro shots. The drawback is that the image will be considerably less sharp and you can't focus to infinity. I'm all about modern looks but if I'm being completely honest I think full frame loses charm particularly with face proportion, people often look too slim, even sickly. There are some films where you need scale and scope, like Dune, where larger format is very fitting, but there are some recent films where I think it even detracted from the film. I understand why it was used for John Wick 4 (color, low light, 4th film variety) but for some films like Mass (drama), Dungeons and Dragons, I found the experience unfitting. Am i the only one that feels like large format should be used in niche cases and not as a standard? It's a great look for general video but for cinematography I find it less compelling. When shooting FF I always felt compelled to shoot shallower DOF because when you can see so much of the background and its so deep it doesn't look very pleasing. Also grain looks weird to me on full frame, but i did it anyway so you can see. Actually I shot a bunch of scenes unoptimally and pushed to the limit so you can see the breaking points. I will say that FF at night is incredible wide open, though f1.4 APSC is still acceptable. When I watch Bladerunner 2049, I think to myself, wasn't this the perfect genre to shoot full frame? But as we all know it wasn't necessary and was perfectly shot. Super35 to ME is more cinematic, though I don't really like anything narrower than 35mm cropped, unless 40mm anamorphic. I also want to clarify what I mean by closeness and intimacy, what I mean is the crop not the distance to the subject. If any of you ghosts like watches, an analogy that comes to mind is quartz vs mechanic watches. I’d say that full frame is just like that, better accuracy but super35 might just have a little bit more soul like that mechanical watch. I'll have to shoot more full frame shorts to get a better feel, maybe I'll have to add more suitable lenses to get a better feel because 28mm ff is too wide for my taste. Overall, if you have full frame lenses metabones works well and has much better electronics than the fringer as well, though occasionally the connection is wonky. I particularly love it for photography. Get the standard version unless you need follow focus. As always, spend wisely.
