Ancient Messini is one of the MOST Amazing, MUST VISIT Archaeological sites in Greece. Established originally in Myceanean times (1500BC) and then occupied by the defeated Spartans, it was only abandoned in the 10th Century AD Located in the Peloponnese, approximately 16km from Kalamata, the City was established in 371BC by the Helots after the defeat of the Spartans in the Peloponnesian Wars. The original site Ithomi is traditionally and locally considered to be the Birth Place of the God Zeus. It is 2.5 hours drive from Athens, and is greatly overlooked by tourists, this is SO MUCH BETTER to visit than Ancient Olympia. An easy day trip from Athens, or Kalamata, and located on a mountain side this Ancient city has everything. 2 Theatres, 2 Temples, a Stadium, A greek Agora, A Roman Bath a Gymnasium, several Stoa and more besides. The a a nice little museum attached to the site displaying many of the Greek and Roman finds. Surrounding the site are the astonishing remains of the 9km defensive city walls, and worth the drive 800m or so up the road to see the Arcadian Gate. It is one of the best places I have visited and filmed in Greece.
