How to build exterior stairs from recycled cement block

Recycling cement block left over from a demolition for a use in another project is a way to cut down on expenses as well as limit what will ultimately end up in a landfill. After we demoed a 40 foot tall chimney and 2 fireplaces, we were left with a substantial pile of material. Some of that was different sizes of cinder blocks and bricks in very useable condition. Rather than add them to a landfill, we used many of those materials to build a set of exterior stairs. This repurposing of materials also provided a substantial cost savings over purchasing everything new. Most important to this construction is a solid foundation. We cut away solid packed earth being careful to go no deeper than absolutely necessary. Laying block on disturbed or soft ground would require compaction first.
