I think that there are 3 main pillars for being fast. 1: You need to find someone that you respect, look up to and want to make proud. For me that is my US Trials coach and Lea Day. Both of these people are / have been high level rowers that have helped me through my highest highs and lowest lows. 2: You need to focus on what you suck at. This whole year I have been on a cycling team which has made by aerobic base insane. So when I decided I wanted to PR I hit the gym hard and did a 1-2 pieces at high rate to familiarize myself with the erg again. Then I did 1500's at pace to get more comfortable on 2k day. 3: You need to not "no life" rowing. You still need to have a life, I still go party, go to the beach and kick it with the boys every weekend. This is essential because it lets you unwind from training. I find that if you are "no lifing" rowing it burns you out. Whenever im having a rough session I just think about the weekend or something fun I did in the past week.
