The Flehmen Response in Horses.

In this video we talk about the Flehmen Response in Horses. The Flehmen Response is when a horse curls his upper lip, and bares his upper teeth, he also raises his head when doing this and snuffles air in and out through his nostrils. The Flehmens Response is usually triggered by pheromones and also certain scents, particularly new scents. The response is seen a lot in stallions, when they are sniffing a mare to see if she is ready to mate. The response is also seen in foals when they encounter new scents. The purpose of the response is to draw the scent into the Vomeronasal Organ or Jacobson's Organ which is situated at the base of the Nasal Cavity. The Vomeronasal Oragan is an accessory olfactory organ and its purpose is to bring the scent directly into the most primitive/primal areas of the horse's brain, the amygdala and the hypothalamus. This initiates an immediate response, similar to a reflex, hence the function of the The Flehmen Response lies in survival, i.e. mainly reproduction and possibly fear. It is seen in many mammals from Horses to Big Cats. Music: https://www.bensound.com
