Nestled in the French Alps within Mercantour National Park, Tende is a medieval village steeped in history. With origins dating back to the tenth century, it has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, shifting between the Counts of Ventimiglia, Provence, and the Lascaris. The village boasts remnants of the Lascaris Castle, a fortress built in the 14th century to ward off threats from Charles d'Anjou. Though most of the castle succumbed to King Louis XIV's order for destruction in 1692, a clock-adorned circular tower remains, chiming the passage of time over Tende. Amidst its picturesque landscapes, Tende was a vital hub for the historic salt trade between Italy and France, marked by tolls imposed by the Lascaris.
