In 1996, Atal Bihar Vajpayee sworn-in as Prime Minister of India for first time. With 161 seats BJP formed the government. President Shankar Dayal Sharma called BJP to prove the majority in the Parliament. Left parties opposed the decision of the President for calling them to form government. It was almost impossible for the BJP to get the magic number of 272 in Lok Sabha. It was first time when Lok Sabha session was on-aired live on televisions. Vajpayee resigned from his Prime Ministership just before the confidence motion in the Parliament. HD Deve Gowda became chief of 13 parties and sworn-in as next PM of the country.
