John Williamson 43pts/Game Winner vs Knicks (1978)

February 12 1978 John Williamson puts on the performance of a lifetime in New Jersey, putting up on an absolute clinic from the midrange area, scoring 43 points against the New York Knicks. Williamson would cap off this masterclass performance with the game winning bucket, to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 2 point victory. Williamson went from unknown to "Dr. J" Erving's sidekick with the New York Nets in the ABA, after being selected late in the 6th round of the NBA draft following a stellar college career at New Mexico State. Williamson averaged 27 a game in college, just to get picked in the 6th round. The team that picked him, Atlanta Hawks, cut him in training camp. He made his way to the Nets via an offer and went from unknown rookie in training camp to starting along the Doctor. John was huge in the 1976 ABA Finals for the Nets, putting in 28 points in Game 6, where alongside Erving led the Nets to the ABA championship. While not up to par with the NBA in regards to functioning ability, the talent was almost identical, and I think the Nets and all ABA champs should just regard it as the same as an NBA championship. It's hard to win the chip against professionals. Williamson was traded to the Indiana Pacers during the 1976-77 season, but was traded back to the Nets the following year. He continued playing as a big offensive contributor in New Jersey as the Nets made their way into the NBA without Dr J, scoring 22 points a game in the 1978-79 season. His scoring average dipped the following year, and after a trade to the Washington Bullets Williamson's playing time severly decreased. In his age 29 year, John Williamson played in 9 games for the Bullets, playing 12 minutes a game. What the hell happened? This is 2 years after this video. TWO. I guess he's the precursor of Latrell Sprewell, where he as a free agent held many contract disputes and struggled to maintain a playable weight. After finally getting no interest at all, instead of Sprewell and just retiring, Williamson joined the CBA (G-League) but still didn't receive any interest. He was 31. Finally calling it quits, Williamson went back home to New Haven, Connecticut and worked in a juvenile detention center until his death at age 45 from diabetes.
