Build Dog Agility A-Frame (Step 1)

How to build a practice dog agility A-frame. This first step covers the materials needed and how to lay out the frame. This is Step 1 of 6 in my "Dog Agility A-Frame" Playlist. Materials • 3/4•" Wood Panels (2) • 2x4's for framing • Door Hinges (3) • Wood slats for rungs (14) • Eyebolts and carabineers - I decided to use a different eye-bolt than the ones shown in this video. Instead, I will use a regular bolt that does not self screw so that it has a flat end. I will be attaching it through the side 2x4 of the frame. This way my two panels can fold down completely on top of one another for stor•age. • Chain • Paint with sand additive Description • Panels must be flat and straight • Connected at the top so as to eliminate gaps large enough to fit a dog’s paw • Top surface must be a non-slip whether wet or dry. Do not use glossy paint. A good solution is a sand additive to your paint. • Slats across the width of the panels to provide footing, extending to within ¼ inch of the panel sides. • Slat edges shall be rounded or beveled so as not to be sharp, and ¼-inch radius is recommended. • The centers of the slats are placed at 12” intervals (+/- 2”), and no slat is within 4” of the top of a contact zone. • Attach door hinges to connect the panels at the top so that it can be placed in an A-shape • Attach chain to back side of panels using the eye bolts and carabineers. This is used to set the height of the A-frame. • Contact zones are identified on the lower 42” (+/-¼”) with the color contrasting with the rest of the panel and extending to the side of the contact. Bright yellow contact zones are recommended. They may not be white, black or brown. Dimensions: Panel Width: 35” – 49” Panel Length: 9’ (+/- 2”) Slats: 3/8” – ½” thick by ¾” - 1½” wide *Slats spaced 12"; slats must be a minimum 4" (but no more than 6") above and below contact point edge. Slats shall measure between 3/8" and 1/2" in thickness and between 3/4" and 1-1/2" in width and span the full width of the plank or sidewall. Height: 5’ 6” (+/- 1”) Except for 4” and 8” jump heights, set to 5’ (+/- 1”) Performance Dogs must ascend one panel and descend the other in the direction designated by the judge and they must touch the contact zone on the down side only, with any part of one foot prior to exiting the obstacle.
