That's what we learned on our camping trip to the Tennessee River. Our trip to The Shoals area was brief but even as casual visitors we experienced the special spirit of this area. We only went because I made a mistake. We wanted to see glow worms at Dismals Canyon, but we were too late in the summer for that. Still, we needed to be in Nashville for a wedding, so why not stop and see The Shoals area in northwest Alabama? Three towns make up this magical corner of the state--Tuscumbia, Florence and Muscle Shoals. All I knew about this area before this summer was that an acquaintance of mine who knew a lot of famous people used to go camping in Muscle Shoals. To prepare for the trip we watched the documentary about Muscle Shoals available here:    • Muscle Shoals   This small area just 4 hours from Atlanta and only a two hours from Nashville played an unbelievably central role in creating the sounds of 20th Century American music yet it seems somehow still hidden and completely unspoiled. Our visit was full of unexpected moments and connections. We stayed at Joe Wheeler State Park (https://www.alapark.com/parks/joe-whe.... In addition to Muscle Shoals Sound Studio (https://muscleshoalssoundstudio.org) we visited Tom's Wall (https://msnha.una.edu/sites-attractio.... I also toured Helen Keller's Childhood Home (https://helenkellerbirthplace.org). We had an interesting night at Rattlesnake Saloon (https://www.rattlesnakesaloon.net/s) and a great meal at Odette (https://www.odettealabama.com). Oh and Pepper went paddle boarding. And we slept really well on our new Tochta mattress!
