This is a selection and collection of lectures in Dynamic Meteorology. In this lecture, I introduce the lapse rate, and in particular, how does temperature change with height. This is for dry air. Then the potential temperature is introduced, which is the temperature a parcel would have if moved adiabatically, without adding heat, from some altitude to the surface. This tells you why it gets cooler when you do up into the mountains. In other lectures, we arrived at a situation where the geostrophic and hydrostatic balance largely define the flow. Now we see this pull towards an adiabatic (or a moist adiabatic) lapse rate. Very powerful. But, we are interested in how the flow changes, and this means investigating the "small" differences from these balances. A link to the full series is at: https://openclimate.org/course-collec...
