Stuart Smith, owner of Leo the Rhodesian Ridgeback who starred in his earlier clip, Why To Get a Rhodesian Ridgeback, introduces us to another of his canine companions: the elegant and highly-intelligent Raven, a doberman. Raven joined the household when she was ten months. She’s about five years old now. She’d had a difficult start in life, receiving a less-than ideal standard of care. But with stability, training, and a loving home, she’s become an important part of the family. Stuart describes how as intelligent and motivated dogs, Dobermans like to feel that they have something meaningful to do - guarding their humans, for one. The breed began in Germany, with a tax collector called Mr Doberman. People weren’t always too keen to pay what they owned to this gentleman, and he had to go into some pretty tough areas, so he decided he wanted a dog that looked intimidating, and had good guarding instincts. Many people continue to think of Dobermans solely in those terms, but as Stuart points out, they are also among the most intelligent of dog breeds, who love interacting with their humans. These dogs often like to have project on the go, such as making sure all their humans, and their homes are safe. Raven has taken this duty to heart - woe betide the golfer who tries to retrieve a ball he’s hit over the fence. Most entrancing of all for Raven, and her most keenly-felt task, is reacting to the doorbell. If the bell rings, Raven regards it as her sacred duty to react. Stuart captures the undying optimism on her part - to actually MEET the person or being or even monster on the other side of the door one day - with a poem that nicely sums up how hope spring eternal. He highly recommends getting a Doberman as a pet, as he’s found them to be affectionate, bright and attentive. But they do require care, so he suggests that if you’re thinking about getting one - do your due diligence and make sure your circumstances and energy will allow you to offer your pet the best quality of life. Then Raven gets to eat the treat she’s been jonesing for for all along….
