A tour of TrainerRoad

TrainerRoad is an indoor cycling app similar to Sufferfest (now known as SYSTM?). It's all about structured workouts so is different to apps like Zwift, Rouvy and RGT that provide you with a virtual world to cycle in. TrainerRoad is just a screen of numbers but perfect for cyclists looking to get faster. In this video, I'll walk you through the app, the website, integrations, your options on getting started and the things I like and don't like. 00:00 Introduction 00:40 Workout and app demo 06:16 Exploring the app further 07:36 Website, training plans 10:19 Custom training plans 13:19 Calendar 16:18 Integrations to Strava, etc 16:46 Setup options 17:39 What do I like? 18:20 What don't I like? 20:36 Summary The app runs on your phone, tablet or computer and controls your smart trainer it simply reads from sensors on your dumb trainer. This delivers structured interval workouts which are personalised to you: you start by taking an FTP test and then the workouts are all power-based, so you may encounter 60 seconds at 200% or maybe 15 minutes at 90%, etc. It comes with hundreds of different workouts. How do you pick? You don't need to. TrainerRoad comes with a bunch of training plans for cyclists and triathletes so whether you are looking to race criteriums, TTs or triathlons, it will deliver a training programme for you. It will even offer multisport athletes suggested swim and run sessions (but you don't do these in the app). It will even build you a custom training plan based on the events you have coming up. It integrates with Strava, TrainingPeaks, Garmin and others. As it s power-based, ideally you will have a smart trainer or power meter on your bike. But if you don't, don't worry, you can use a speed sensor to generate virtual power, though it won't be as accurate as a meter. What do I like about TrainerRoad? It is great for ststs people and I like the numbers. Building a training plan for me takes a lot of the work out as I don't need to worry about my bike workouts. In that sense, it is far more advanced and customisable than the training sessions and plans you get on Zwift. What don't I like? It's boring. There is no virtual world so I ever need to run Zwift as well or watch TV. Both of these are problematic: Zwift requires an ANT+ adapter because I'm using Bluetooth or TrainerRoad, and I have to get off the bike to play the next episode when I'm watching TV. Also, I haven't seen great gains recently. I did the mid plan for 3 months (6+ hours per week) and gained 5 Watts on my FTP. What's the point? Overall, I think TrainerRoad is a solid app and I've been using it since 2017. However, recently, I've been fed up with the lack of gains and wondering why am I paying for both TrainerRoad and Zwift. For most people, Zwift is probably more fun. But if you're only concerned about numbers (age groupers trying to qualify, etc) this might be your best option.
