To plan this trip, I used Google Maps to estimate the distance between every location, as well as provide the departure times for the trains. Google was completely accurate in its estimated shinkansen departures, so when we bought the JR Pass online and I went to pre-reserve our seats online, I could choose the train exactly based on the planned itinerary. It was also fairly easy to navigate using Google Maps--much easier than New York, at least. Most of the local subway stops are numbered (rather than being a random name in Japanese) and there was lots of English signage. Sep 29 - Departing New York We tried to stay up the whole night before our flight, which ended up working quite well. We barely had time to feel jetlagged because the schedule was so packed with exciting activities. Sep 30 - Arriving in Japan Our fight was delayed by 1.5 hours. When we finally got to Tokyo, we walked to Ichiran Shimbashi because the Asakusa location actually closes at 10pm. After stopping at 7-11 to get some cash, we purchased some little drinks and snacks. The street under the Ueno-Tokyo line was very lively and full of little shops and bars with young people hanging out. When we got to Ichiran, there was a pretty long line, so we went to Sushi Zanmai Shimbashi and got seafood don bowls. Then we walked all the way back to the hotel. We walked 4 miles. Oct 1 - Cycling along Kibiji Path and exploring the Bikan historic neighborhood We left Tokyo as planned and had a nice first train. It was not very crowded in our car. Once we got to Okayama and dropped our luggage off at the hotel, we went to the mall to find some medicine. There was still time to go biking and the afternoon weather was perfect. We rode the JR Kibi Line out of the city and towards the country side. The train dropped us off at Bizen Ichinomiya station. We accidentally put a JR Pass into the ticket disposal, but luckily someone from Okayama Station arrived and helped us retrieve it. We rented bikes at the nearby Uedo Bicycle Rental store. They had some English instructions for us. It turned out that the path is marked with street signs, so it wasn't too difficult to find our way. We successfully made it to Soja although there wasn't enough time to visit all the sites. Finally, we headed to Kurashiki, but found that almost all the shops there were closed. It was still nice exploring the area at night. We got dinner back in Okayama at Tokushima Ramen. We walked 9 miles. Oct 2 - Day trip to Hiroshima: Miyajima Island, Peace Memorial, and local okonimiyaki We arrived at Miyajima as planned. After exploring a bit, it was apparent there would be a lot to do on the island. We took the ropeway up to the mountain station. The paths were a bit confusing, but we hiked to the summit and back. After returning to the main shopping street, we got some street food snacks like fried okonomiyaki sticks and honey ice cream. Our evening plan was to return to Kurashiki earlier than we got there the night before, so we headed back to Okayama. However, even at 5:45pm, all the shops were closed. We ended up eating at Tokushima Ramen for dinner again. We walked 10.7 miles. Oct 3 - Okayama Castle and Korakuen, Kibiji Path again, and Dotonbori In the morning, we enjoyed the hotel's Japanese buffet breakfast. They had so many options between rices, fish and pickled vegetables, and sweet mango pancakes. We then walked to the Okayama Castle and Korakuen. The castle had a little museum, but the Korakuen was the main attraction. It had so many different garden features and there was also a group of school children doing some sort of gardening activity. After checking out of the hotel, we went back to Bizen Ichinomiya to do some more biking. This time, we had the chance to explore the different temples and shrines in the area. The train from Okayama to Osaka was not too long. We changed and went to a delicious dinner at Junchan Sushi in Dotonbori. We walked 9.4 miles. --- Timestamps 00:00 - New York 00:16 - Landing in Tokyo 01:00 - Train to Okayama 01:48 - Okayama 02:14 - Train to Bizen-Ichinomiya 02:59 - Biking in Kibiji 07:40 - Kurashiki at night 08:46 - Train to Hiroshima 09:09 - Ferry to Miyajima 10:06 - Momijidani Park 11:26 - Mt.
