Kavala (Greek: Καβάλα) is a city in northern Greece, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia and the capital of Kavala regional unit. It is situated on the Bay of Kavala, across from the island of Thasos and on the Egnatia motorway, a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Thessaloniki (160 kilometers west). It is also about 150 kilometers west of Alexandroupoli. Kavala is an important economic center of Northern Greece, a center of commerce, tourism, fishing and oil-related activities and formerly a thriving trade in tobacco. The city was probably founded by settlers from Paros around the 6th century BC. It was called Naples, meaning new city. The gold mines in the nearby Pangeon Hills made it a thriving resort. It became a Roman civitas in 168 BCE. and was the base of Brutus and Cassius before the Battle of Philippi. The apostle Paul reached Kavala on his first trip to Europe, and during the Byzantine era the name of the city was renamed Christupolis. Kavala was part of the Ottoman Empire in the years 1371-1912, and in 1913, as a result of the Balkan Wars, it became part of Greece. The birthplace of Muhammad Ali and his adoptive son Ibrahim Pasha is located here. The most characteristic objects are: the Byzantine-Venetian castle on the Panajia hill and the aqueduct built on the order of Suleiman I.
