Thunderstorm in the rainforest

The sounds of thunder reverberate around the forested hills and valleys of Borneo. It's late afternoon in the jungle but the sky has become so dark it might as well be night. The thunderstorm has been building up all day, circling the horizon. The heat is unbearable, and nature seems to be holding its breath as the rain gets close. Thunder rolls in the distance and its reflections bounce around the river basin. Eventually a little rain materialises, but it stops as soon as it reaches the valley. The hills surrounding Maliau Basin have blocked the heaviest clouds once again. It is much cooler now, and the insect chorus has resumed. Sparse birdsong can be heard, as confused individuals can't decide between advertising their territories and going to sleep. The daily thunderstorm has passed, and the rainforest prepares for the night again. Crepuscular and nocturnal species are welcoming the relative cool of the night and the noise of waterdrops falling on vegetation that masks their movement. A little bit of thunder can still be heard in the distance, fading away as the clouds disappear into the horizon. Recorded in Borneo with Sony PCM D10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones.
