United in the Skies: USAAF Air Command 1942-45 With Luke Truxal Part of 8th Air Force Week on WW2TV    • 8th Air Force Week   More Strategic Bombing content on WW2TV    • Strategic Bombing in WWII   In today's show we look at the changes and improvements made to the structure of the USAAF Command from 1942/43 to the end of the war. We look at the doctrine of 1942, experience earned in North Africa and the Mediterranean and decisions made at the Casablanca Conference. Low points include Ploesti and the Schweinfurt and Regensburg raids culminating in a crisis in October/November 1943. After further restructuring of the Command and Spaatz's departure the next tests were Anzio and Operations Fishfang and Argument. These were followed by Big Week, Overlord and more potential bumps in the road over the winter of 1944. Luke Truxal is an adjunct at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee. He is also an assistant editor for the scholarly web journal Balloons to Drones. He completed his PhD in 2018 from the University of North Texas with his dissertation "Command Unity and the Air War Against Germany." His previous publications include “Bombing the Romanian Rail Network,” in the Spring 2018 issue of Air Power History. He has also written “The Politics of Operational Planning: Ira Eaker and the Combined Bomber Offensive in 1943” in the Journal of Military Aviation History.
