Discovery of Virus | A Class Room Experience Welcome to the world virology. In this video lecture discovery of virus | A class room experience I discussed with my students about history and discovery of virus according to new book of biology for first year pre-medical group. What are viruses? Why they are known as viruses? How different scientists contribute to the discovery of viruses, etc. "Aur wo bhe aap ko apni zuban / boli / bhasha main". :-) Notes The term virus means “venom” or “poison” and initially used for diseases that have unexplainable origin at that time. Viral diseases are known for centuries and first disease against which Edward Jenner developed vaccine was a viral infection i.e. small pox. In 1884, French microbiologist Charles Chamberland (an associate of Louis Pasteur) discovers that solution containing causative agents of rabies (a viral infection) can cross porcelain filters (which at that time used to filter bacteria from solutions). Soon same fact established for many other diseases and term filterable virus becomes common in biological world. In 1892 D. Ivanovsky finds out that disease extract from one virally infected organism (tobacco plant for Ivanovsky’s study) when transmitted to other organisms can lead to transmission of infection from one organism to other. Twort and Herelle discovered bacteriophage viruses in 1915 and 1917 respectively. In 1931 first electron microscope was invented and after 4 years of that W. Stanley crystalized first viruses i.e. Tobacco mosaic viruses. Stanley discovered viruses by using compound microscope and studied its detailed structure by using electron microscope.
