How Sweet It Is | Jerry Garcia Evolution '73-'91

In this video we’re going to take a look at 5 different intro solos on “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” as played by Jerry Garcia from 1973-1991. "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" was written in 1964 by the Motown songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland and first recorded by Marvin Gaye on his fifth studio album of the same name in 1965. Although played once by the Grateful Dead on March 25, 1972, the song became a staple of Jerry Garcia’s solo bands from 1972 thru 1995. The Jerry Garcia Band version more resembled the version recorded by saxophonist Junior Walker (who recorded for Motown during the 1960s). We listen to the intro as recorded by Jr. Walker & the All Stars from their 1966 album "Road Runner." Although the chord progression is slightly different than the JGB version, you can hear how similar the melody and vocabulary is to Jerry’s versions, especially the older versions (from 1973 and 1974). Throughout the years, as Jerry’s style began to evolve, so did his improvisation over “How Sweet It Is.” Here are my transcriptions from 7/10/73, 12/14/74, 3/1/80, 9/1/90, and 11/9/91. Regardless which version you listen to, Jerry never played it the same way twice.
