Now that summer is here, you may be finding that your child is not as drawn to their Montessori shelf work activities, and is yearning to spend more and more time outside. So let them. Follow your child. Remember that the Montessori activities we present to them, whether we are a Montessori homeschooling family or simply practicing Montessori at home, are pared down versions of the very large world that our kids need to experience. Montessori activities are designed to give our children a chance to learn through their senses, with hands on activities, based in reality that teach them about the great big world. But what better way to experience hands on learning through the senses than to get outside? Yes, there may be some curated materials that are not as easy to replicate through nature-bring them outside. Let your child enjoy the time outside while also having the opportunity to explore those materials at their own pace, as they see an interest in them. The Montessori approach to nature is that the outdoors are an extension of the classroom. And so it is true for the home. Treat nature as the biggest classroom and allow your child the opportunity to learn straight from the source!
