Learning to Surf: Winter Surfing Tips Session 270, three years into my surfing progression. In this video, I wanted to share a few friendly tips on surfing in the winter. I am surfing in the winter in January in the Boston area. The temperature of the water is 41F and the air temperature was even colder at 27F. With wind chill, the weather app said it felt like 20F. I am using a thick winter wetsuit to stay warm. This Xcel wetsuit is a 5/4, meaning it has 5mm of neoprene in your main body and 4mm at the arms and legs to give more flexibility there. It comes with a built in hood, to cover your neck and head. My spare winter wetsuit is also a 5/4 Patagonia wetsuit. These are great for the winter, rated for 38-48F water according to Patagonia, but they are also great for the late fall and early spring. I could have gotten the thickest wetsuit at 6/5, which is rated for even colder, freezing water, but because it is thicker, that may compromise mobility and I thought I might get too warm in the fall and spring. In the winter, my hands and feet get colder than my body, so I try to get extra thickness for gloves and boots. For my hands, I have these Patagonia mittens that are 7mm thick for the coldest days. I also have 5mm gloves that are thinner which I can use for the fall and spring. For my boots, I got the thickest boots at 7mm thickness. Do you surf in the winter? What type of wetsuit do you use? Please share any friendly tips. I would love to hear from you. In the winter, I try to protect my ears too. Surfer’s ear, or exostoses of the external auditory canal, is a slowly progressive disease from benign bone growth in your ear canal, as a result of chronic cold water exposure. This may cause hearing problems, ear infections and other issues and may require surgery to cure it. To prevent this, I purchased these surfears which are ear plugs that prevent cold water from entering my ears but still allow me to hear things. I also use these when swimming in the pool. I’ll also try to leave links for a few of the products I use for winter surfing in the description of the video on Youtube. That way I can just change at home in a warm room. I just use a towel or a bathrobe over my car seat to avoid too much water damage. I also wear a winter hat. I also prefer to keep my board inside my car with a soft terry cloth surf sock by Ho Stevie!. My Tesla and my prior car, a Subaru Outback, could both easily fit a longboard inside. I find this easier than having to deal with mounting the board to the roof rack. After a surfing session, my hands are freezing so I would rather not deal with tying down the board. Also, I can use my frunk for my wet items like gloves. I love the frunk. I try to get out as much as I can! Winter is a great time to go surfing, because there are no beach crowds and fewer surfers. The waves are also very nice when there are noreasters in the boston area. If there are waves, I try to fit in a one hour session in the morning, even on workdays. The days are short in the winter, with late sunrise and early sunsets, so you have to plan accordingly. There is actually 30 minutes of light in the morning before sunrise. This morning for instance, I actually paddled out in semi-darkness, but I was the first one in the water and it was fun! Do you surf in the winter? Please share any friendly tips. I would love to hear from you. Thanks for watching! I hope you liked this video. If you did, please click like, comment or subscribe.
