Opening day in NY for black sea bass is never easy in the western sound, especially since CT has had an open season for over a month prior. But this year things seem different, the bottom fishing in general has been off to a very slow start in the western sound and the stripers are even refusing bunker at times. At the same time, the middle sound region has been seeing an absolute explosion of sand eels (aka the sand lance). This slender little fish has been schooling on the sandy shoals in the sound and drawing in all the top predators we see in the Long Island Sound. Thankfully on this day I was able to find a small patch of them moving west and sure enough some fluke and stripers were right on them!
