US Army Panadapter Model BC-1031-C Initial Test With a Howard 450A Receiver

The owner of this mid-1940's 455KHz centre frequency/200KHz bandwidth panadapter unit asked me to check it out and, hopefully, render it fully-functional. Initial inspections and checks indicated no obvious faults, so it was powered-up and connected to the plate of the mixer tube in a Howard Model 450A receiver (via a 47Kohm resistor and 0.1uF capacitor). The Receiver was tuned to around 5MHz and a signal input to its antenna socket from an HP8601A signal generator. The unit was initially not displaying any signals, a fault traced to a bad 6AC7 input amplifier tube. Once this tube was changed-out, the unit is functional, but is noisy and appears to be misaligned.
