Film as Politics

Film as Politics Making (and screening) films - from documentaries to feature films and TV-series - can be powerful political actions. Even when not overtly political, films may have profound political effects, conveying ideas and knowledge more effectively than political speeches, activism, or research. Through the potential for evoking emotions and insights, film (and other art forms) can change mindsets and attitudes in ways that have profound rights-expanding effects for stigmatized and marginalized communities such as migrants, indigenous peoples, or LGBTIQ+ persons. Or it can have the opposite effect. This roundtable asks: What makes some films politically powerful, for better or worse? And what about the potential for academic learning and research communication: is there an underutilized potential?
