The story of a young girl going off to become a soldier to prevent her father's conscription is both the plot of Mulan, but also the life of an 11th century Christian saint. In the 11th century in the Byzantine Empire, certain places of the empire compelled military service from the men of every family. In the village of Vasta, there lived one such family, that consisted only of daughters so the father would have had to gone off to serve. However, one of his daughter offered herself instead, disguising herself as a man to serve in her father's stead. This is the life of Saint Theodora of Vasta and her miraculous church.
