In a small clinical trial, CRISPR was used for the first time to alter immune cells to create personalised treatments to better target tumours. This is the first time CRIPSR technology has been used to insert genes; it has previously been used to remove specific genes. Such engineered immune cells, called CAR-T cells, have the promise to treat and cure various types of cancer in the near future.
