Operation Blessing sent volunteer teams to help cleanup the homes of Brenda Kelly, her daughter Deborah Kelly, and her granddaughter Kara Tackett in Shelby Gap, Kentucky. All three homes are on the same property where four generations live together as a family. After the historic flooding across eastern Kentucky in July, their property was devastated. At first glance, Brenda and Kara's homes looked completely unsalvageable. Brenda was overwhelmed. The 89-year-old widow shared how around 3:30 a.m. she was awakened by her grandson and told to leave immediately due to the flood waters that had risen to her windows. They quickly hopped in their cars, drove across the street to higher elevation, and watched in horror as their homes were ravaged by the raging waters. The family has been forced to split up and live in separate temporary homes. It has been incredibly difficult for the children to be separate from their siblings. Operation Blessing volunteer teams helped remove damaged furniture, took apart the ruined deck, and brought essential cleaning supplies, emergency meal kits, and water. The Kelly family is so grateful to Operation Blessing partners and volunteers for showing up in their time of need for the first step of a long journey ahead.
