What Is The Maximum Width Of Carpet Rolls From The Mills? - Capell Flooring & Interiors ~

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in the Boise, Idaho area. Hey, so we had a question come up last month, and I thought I'd address it in another FAQ. So the question was, how wide does carpet come when you purchase it? And so if you look here, I wrote how wide does carpet come? So, I would say with carpet, the standard roll size is 12 feet wide. And so I would say, I'm guessing just from my experience of doing this my whole life, that probably nearly 98% of carpet made in the USA comes in 12 feet wide. You can get carpet 12 feet wide by any length, up to a certain point, because if it was 300 feet long, sometimes that works, but it can get really heavy. And so usually, a standard carpet roll is 12 feet by anywhere from 150 to 200 feet long. Okay. So that's a standard roll. Now carpet, sometimes you can get it in either a 13'2" width, sometimes a 13'6", and sometimes a 15 foot by your length. Now, most of the styles that come in width like this usually are foreign and made in Turkey or other areas. If you have a 15-footer, usually some styles like plushes or Berbers that are harder to seam, sometimes you can get those carpets in 15 feet, but it's rare. But we have a few styles here that you can get like that. But you're very limited on selection because 15-foot rolls are one, they're going to get really heavy, and then they're harder to transport. And so it's just something to be aware of and because of the nature of it being standard 12 foot. So if you have a room that's like, Oh, I don't know. Let's say 16x20; you are going to have to put a seam in that room. There's no way around it. They're not going to custom-wide the width for you because that would make the manufacturing process tedious and slow. And it would up the cost significantly if they were making little pieces. So, like in the case of this room here, to combine thoughts, basically with carpet math, you'd need a 12x20, and then you're left over there as a 4x20. So there's a couple of ways around that, but basically, what you do, you'd need to do that. And so that's one thing we discuss with you: how many seams and what you want. If you did 4x20, if you were to draw this out in a room, basically, you'd have your 12-foot piece here. And then you have to decide how many seams you want in it. But with most carpets that are long and have movement to them, it's not a big deal. These are called T-seams. And with a carpet installer who knows what he's doing, that's not a big deal. So then you would take this amount here, and divide by three or divide by two, depending on how many seams you want. Add that to your total, and then you'll know how much carpet to order. So, yeah, it's just kind of interesting. So this question came up, so we wanted to put it on our FAQ page. Most, if not, I don't want to say all, but most, like a high percentage, come in a 12-foot width. But that's something we can definitely talk to you about when we do one of our design audits or things like that. If you have more questions on layout, we can tell you exactly where the seams are going and why. And if you want more of them or less of them, it depends if you want to buy more carpet or not, and have a higher waste factor. So, yeah, you can get these widths, but it's really rare, and you cannot custom do your width. It's just one of those things with the manufacturing process. So hope this helps. If you have any questions about it, please comment below, and I'll definitely answer them for you. I appreciate you taking the time to watch this, and have a wonderful day.
