In the far north of Norway the scary, but amazing lightkeepers trail is located on the tip of Sørøya island. This trail goes to a lighthouse on top of a 130 meters high cliff, but first the trail dives down to the sea before it climbs up again. This is an airy trail next to steep cliffs and the handrails are there for a good reason, but the place is beautiful and the views of the surrounding cliffs, fjords and ocean is breathtaking. In my opinion this is one of the most spectacular hiking trails in Norway. So join me for a walk at 4X down to the sea - later I will publish the second part going up to the lighthouse! I had to add music to this movie as the sound of the wind on the microphone of the Go Pro 7 is quite annoying! It is a magical world - Let's go Exploring! ------------------------------ Please Like Subscribe And go for a walk today! ------------------------------ Tarhalsen lighthouse is facing the Barents sea on top of a 130 meters high cliff on Sørøya island in Northern Norway. It was built in 1933 to provide a much needed navigational aid to sailors. To service the lighthouse a trail was built on the side of the cliffs and brave lightkeepers walked here in all kind of weathers to keep the light going. Today the lighthouse is automated, but a renovated trail was opened in 2016 for use by hikers. This amazing trail is called "Fyrvokterveien (the lightkeepers road) and goes all the way to the cliff through a scenic landscape. As long as you walk slowly and use the rails it is relatively safe, but it is airy and should never be walked in bad weather. The first part of the trail goes down from the plateau leading to Tarhalsen and down to the sea were the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has a cabin open for the public (Tarhalshytta). You can sleep here, but you need to bring enough drinking water for the stay. After the cabin the trail goes up the cliff to where the lighthouse stands. If you walk here do not bring any heavy backpacks with you - leave them behind at the cabin. When you reach the lighthouse the view is amazing as you face the wild Barents sea. This is a hike you will remember for a long time:) To get to Tarhalsen you must first travel to Hammerfest city in Finnmark county in Northern Norway. Then you must take a boat to Akkarfjord village on Sørøya island (regular service in summer). From Akkarfjord you have to walk for about 4-5 hours in gentle terrain before you reach Tarhalsen. Trail is marked by DNT all the way (you see their red "T" on stones in the movie). Incidentally the last lightkeeper died while servicing the lighthouse in bad weather in the 70s. Rest in peace! Remember - Never walk in this area in bad or foggy weather!
