But drivers say otherwise. On a Wednesday afternoon, Kishor*, a BluSmart driver in his late 40s, held the door of his white SUV open with a pronounced look of nervousness on his face. “Ma’am main gate tak nahi aa paaya, thik hai na?” (Is it alright that I was not able to come all the way up to the gate?). Kishor has much to worry about. According to BluSmart policies, 1,000 rupees will be deducted from his wage if there’s a single complaint against him. A few minutes into the ride and a couple of reassurances later, Kishor has calmed down and a sense of normalcy prevails. He apologises again and says that BluSmart, the cab-hailing app service that he is employed at charges a fine of 1,000 rupees even if the driver makes no mistake. In the past few years, the gig economy has mushroomed–exponentially because of the Coronavirus pandemic adding to the population of the prevalent unorganised workforce. Kishor is one among the 7.7 million gig workers in India. Niti Aayog–the country’s official think tank–called the emergence of this work a “new economic revolution globally”. However, even as this unorganised workforce is expected to grow up to 23.5 million by 2029-30, their work conditions are marked by a lack of health insurance, no job security and hardly any leaves, and in some cases no legal contract. Decode spoke to at least 17 drivers working with BluSmart who shed light on the impossible worker policies that they are forced to adhere to. Almost all drivers expressed an overwhelming sense of unease about the lack of assistance and redressal mechanisms on the platform. The Dark Side of BluSmart’s ‘Green’ Story Like Kishor, many gig workers in India are forced to accept strict conditions or fear wage deductions or penalties. Some even fear being booted from the platforms they are associated with. Kishor has been with BluSmart for the past eight months. According to the policies, BluSmart guarantees daily rides worth 2,800 rupees. However, they don’t get assigned the promised number of trips. So, for those earning Rs 1800-2000 daily (before insurance deductions), a 1,000 rupees penalty could prove to be calamitous. Some drivers note that at times they have earned as little as 400 rupees per day.
