Roland Jupiter-8 vs. System-8... Can you hear a difference?

00:00 Who Am I to make a video like this? 03:00 Roland Jupiter-8 quick intro 03:40 Roland System-8 quick intro 04:59 Jupiter-8 vs System-8 preset death match 11:40 Some Back and Forth between the two 14:27 Highly biased commentary 15:12 Stereo patches 20:36 Some closing arguments aka Pros and Cons. I came across a Vintage Roland Jupiter-8 at a great deal locally and I couldn't pass it up. I have never owned a Jupiter-8, so I thought it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am a HUGE fan of the Roland System-8, and I thought this would be the perfect time to show what they sound like up against each other with the Jupiter-8 plug out. I have never seen that video, so I decided to make one. Before filming the video, I found a few (about 15 or so) factory patches in the original that had striking similarities to the System-8, so I played them both to see. The results were pretty shocking to my ears. I didn't play them all (useless exercise), but I did the "best of" just to see how well Roland did. Many people do comparisons like this while showing a vector/oscilloscope and while that's fun to look at, no one makes music looking at a scope, except for ‪@Hainbach‬ and he gets my permission! It is important to note that the System-8 is NOT a bunch of cleverly done samples--- it's not a ROMpler like the Jupiter-X--- it's Analog Circuit Behavior modelling, where Roland meticulously modelled the circuits of the different VCO's, VCF's, envelopes and VCA's and how audio would pass through them at all ranges and then that mathematical algorithm turns into analog audio at the last possible moment. This is exactly what Universal Audio does with their plugins of the hardware that they still make and sell. While the System-8 plays these "plug outs" without a computer, they are byte-for-byte the exact same code that you can buy and run in your DAW as a VST today. Technical: The Jupiter-8 and System-8 are wired in stereo through the same Mackie 1202 VLZ3 mixer, into my Speck via the same channel, and finally into the RME Fireface UFX, and I did my best to keep levels the same *unless noted in the video. There is no post processing whatsoever; no EQ, no compression, and no effects (how all videos should be, IMHO). On the System-8, there is no Global FX OFF, so I have attempted to defeat this manually each patch. I could have played this via MIDI for precise A/B, but I think the allure of synths with knobs is to physically interact with them and adjust them as necessary. There are points in the video where I adjust either synth to match better. The first part was recorded as a single channel in mono, because the Jupiter-8 is mostly a mono output, until stacked in Dual mode. Later on, I record in Dual mode in Stereo, but there are slight differences because I didn't put the System-8 in Dual mode on accident. This Jupiter-8 has been calibrated and tuned for about a month, and it passes all tests. The System-8 has its "Condition" set at 0, where Roland lets you go -100 or +100 to allow for destabilization. CAUTION: This is the dumbest video I've ever done (it probably cost me over $10,000), but I'm not here on earth to be nice. I'm here to be a Professional Synthesizer Critic and use Tough (Synth) Love™ to hopefully help cure Gearlust one synth at a time and help people put down their internetz and make more music using what they have!
