Patagonia Aerials: Fly Along with the Crew

The BBC Natural History Unit contracted the Aerial Filmworks team to bring back unprecedented aerials of Patagonia. The extensive shot list included subjects such as the rugged and mystical Cape Horn to glaciers and active volcanoes. Aerial Filmworks rigged the rock-solid Cineflex Elite system to an Airbus AS350-B3e helicopter to film in some of the world's most extreme conditions. The ARRI Alexa and the 14.5-60mm Canon Cinema Lens in the Cineflex allowed the aerial team to move quickly between locations. The footage was captured at varying frame rates for both standard and slow motion playback. "The Cineflex Elite worked non-stop through the intense heat of volcanoes to the bone-chilling cold of mega-glaciers and high altitude ice fields," states Ron Chapple, Aerial Director of Photography. Extreme weather conditions is normal for Patagonia with the helicopter encountering winds up to 70 mph at times, plus rain and snowfall. Aerial Filmworks also conducted the first real-world tests for the new Airfilm PEOVI GoPro mount. All of the under-the-helicopter scenes were filmed with a GoPro in the PEOVI mount at 60 FPS in 2.7K resolution. Highlights of the trip were filming at Cape Horn, or the "edge of the map" as the next land mass is Antarctica, and Mt. Villerica, an active volcano that erupted in full force within 36 hours of the filming session! Thanks to a great production team!
