Lecture by Jim Keen DVM PhD University of Nebraska-Lincoln The industrial (“factory farm”) model of raising animals for food generates legitimate concerns about livestock health and welfare and also harms people and the environment. Land grant university & USDA research is the mother of most industrial agricultural practices. Laws, regulations and institutional policies exist to address food animal well-being in research settings. But what happens when these laws and policies are ignored or when institutions are exempt from oversight? This case study recounts a well-publicized 2015 exposé of animal abuse at the largest livestock research center in the world - the US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Nebraska. The presenter is intimately familiar with MARC having worked there as a veterinarian and researcher for 26 years. Industrial livestock research philosophies and practices, exemplars of livestock abuse at MARC resulting from this philosophy, and the presenter’s experience as a whistleblower of this abuse are described. Finally, Keen proposes law and policy approaches to improve research livestock .
