GEM80 by NuPhy | Build + many sound tests in different configs

*This board was sent to me by NuPhy Please check the time stamps below to quickly pin point the section you are most interested in. Regarding the sound tests: I removed the space bar sound dampener from sound test 5. I taped over the flex cuts on the PCB from sound test 17. I'm sorry I did not showcase the RGB lights for this board but please check out other awesome Gem80 videos by other reviewers! Aesthetic The Mystic Indigo colour is very saturated and vibrant! I chose the colour as it complements my setup very well. There are no noticeable scratches or stains on my unit. I also love the rounded edges of the board. After mounting the switches and keycaps, my main gripe with the board is how the keycaps do not recess into the top case, so you can see the switches peeking through. It is probably for the RGB lights to shine through but I personally do not use RGB lights at all. But this is a preference. Mounting style and foam options There are technically only 2 types: gasket and top. The gasket mounts come in different types of silicone shapes and hardness so it's mostly for the typing feel. However I also notice a bit of sound difference when using different types of silicones. With all the foams assembled, the sound difference is very small even when using different silicones and mounting style. However, as I remove the foams one by one, the sound difference becomes more obvious. Check my sound tests and let me know what you think! Sound This board leans towards a deeper sound profile, with foams or without foams. With all the foams, the boards sound deep and marbly. If you watched my sound tests, I did not include sound tests for no foams because the board sounded very hollow so I did not see the point of including the no foam sound tests. The Gem80 also sounded better without the silicone bottom in my opinion as it makes the board sounds flat. I would love to try filling the bottom case with polyfill but I don't have any, so I used the PCB foams. In my opinion, the Gem80 sounds better with foams. My favourite configuration is top mount, PC plate with PCB and plate foams. The alphas sound bright and full while the spacebar sounds deep, the perfect sound combo for me. Raspberry switches The switches look so yummy! They sound like any other long pole switches, nothing special. They were also too light for me so I hope NuPhy will consider coming out with heavier linear switches. Keycaps I do not like high profile keycaps and I'm biased towards cherry profile. But if you love a deeper sounding board, you will love these mSA profile keycaps! They do make the board sound deep and combined with the foams, the Gem80 sound super marbly.
