Catch a Dinosaur! How to Fish for Longnose Gar on Lake Champlain

Longnose Gar are native to Vermont's Lake Champlain, and they possess some amazing attributes that make them fun and challenging to fish for! Often called a "living fossil", the Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus osseus) is a survivor - an ancient and primitive fish species relatively unchanged since the Cretaceous Period 60-150 million years ago. The Longnose Gar's snout is over twice the length of its head, is lined with dense rows of long, needle-point teeth, and made out of hard bone. Specialized techniques will improve your chances of hooking and landing one of these amazing fish. Usually found in shallow, marshy bays around vegetation, gar can often be spotted in groups sunning themselves on the surface, or lying in wait to ambush prey, so for those who love the challenge of sight fishing, the Gar is for you! Its long, torpedo-shaped body gives them quick burst speeds to ambush prey, snapping and thrashing its neck sideways in an impressive strike. Falsely labelled as invasive and harmful, gar play an important, valuable role in Lake Champlain's aquatic ecosystem. If you're lucky enough to catch one, be sure to take a moment to marvel at its interlocking, diamond-shaped, mineral-coated scales that wrap them in a nearly impenetrable suit of armor. True beauties! This ancient native fish deserves our respect and appreciation. They can offer outstanding fishing opportunities on a rod and reel, and they're an integral part of Lake Champlain’s fish community!
