The former Belgian Congo, and what we today know as the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a massive country in central Africa which stands as one of the poorest, most unstable nations in the world. The borders of the Congo are not natural nor representative of a single tribe or ethnic group, as they are largely remnants of the old Belgian Congo's colonial borders. This has all led many to wonder why exactly the Congo's borders haven't been redrawn, and why given the region's history of mass instability and war that it hasn't yet collapsed. There was a strong chance for the Congo to collapse almost immediately following its independence, when the states of Katanga, the DRC, South Kasai, and Kongo all sought independence or dominance of the central government in an event known as the Congo Crisis. The secession crisis in the Congo was resolved when Joseph Mobutu unified the military, eliminated opposition, and reunified the Congo into the Republic of Zaire...but what if that changed? What if in an alternate timeline the Congo collapsed? In this alternate history we consider the potential break up of the Congo along the lines of the Congo Crisis, and analyze what this would mean for Africa as a whole. How would the collapse of the Congo effect Cold War geopolitics? Would the Congo be better off and more stable if its borders were redrawn? We'll explain all that and more.
