Chryssoula Mitsopoulou: "Lefebvre, The City and the Everyday"

Henri Lefebvre is very famous about his programmatic idea that the spatial and the social are intertwined. Chryssoula discusses this idea in the context of talking about the relationship between his thinking on the "city" and the "urban" on the one hand, and his theorisation of the "everyday" on the other. This relationship is mediated by his idea that space is closely related to time, and hence that the problem of the city should be posed in terms of a "rhythmanalysis". In this respect, my aim is to show that his critique of modern everyday life, which is summarised in the idea of the "establishment" and "consolidation" of "everydayness" is organically linked to his critique of the modern city and more specifically with his idea of the degeneration of the "urban" within it. Chryssoula Mitsopoulou teaches at the Department of Political Studies and History, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Athens, where her field is Social Theory, specialising in courses on the problem of ideology, the city in social theory, and the critique of everyday life. Her PhD was about the theorizations of "everyday life" in the work of Lefebvre and Agnes Heller.
