Griffith discovered that a harmless strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae could be made virulent after being exposed to heat-killed virulent strains. Griffith hypothesized that some "transforming principle" from the heat-killed strain was responsible for making the harmless strain virulent. Transformation process allows a bacterium to take up genes from its surrounding environment; i.e., transformation involves the direct uptake of fragments of DNA by a recipient cell and the acquisition of new genetic characteristics.
