An example of Victorian water collection, using an adit or heading. Often when a well was sunk in Chalk or Upper Greensand strata, the water supply could be increased by driving horizontal tunnels, called adits or headings, into the surrounding rock, thereby tapping into water bearing fissures in the rock. This heading joins a 54 foot brick-lined well, 9 feet from its bottom. In this example, the water is derived from the Upper Greensand and reaches the top of the well, which is located in a brick pipe tunnel. Apologies for the shaky, wobbly camera work in places and the scraping sounds - that's what you get with a crap video operator, using home-made, DIY equipment!
