He works to preserve women and children’s rights in The Gambia, and promotes access to justice through the provision of legal aid. For over twenty years, Madi has worked to better human rights in his country. Since 1994, The Gambia has been ruled under President Yahya Jammeh’s brutal dictatorship. What can only be described as a reign of terror on his own people, Jammeh’s administration has subject thousands of Gambians to arbitrary arrest, illegal detention, rape, torture, enforced disappearance and summary executions. As a leading voice for human rights in The Gambia, Madi has faced intimidation by authorities and has been subject to constant surveillance. Because of these threats, Madi was relocated to Groningen in 2016 as part of the Shelter City relocation programme. Powered by Justice and Peace Netherlands, Shelter City offers human rights defenders at risk a chance to rest, re-energise, expand their network, and gain vital resilience training. Groningen is one of the ten Dutch Shelter Cities in The Netherlands. During his stay in The Netherlands, Madi reached out to human rights organisations and international institutions, enhanced his advocacy skills, and had the opportunity to rest and reflect. Because of worsening events in The Gambia, Madi’s stay was extended to continue his studies in human rights law at the University of Groningen. In December 2016, history was made when President Jammeh was elected out of office. One month later, Jammeh resigned. Madi has now safely returned to The Gambia to continue protecting human rights and to empower the Gambian people in building a stable and inclusive democracy.
