Built for a lord in 1850 by a leading victorian architect in Scottish Baronial style, complete with massive keep, turrets and battlements. It remained as a residential home until 1939, when the public assistance department bought and transformed the building into a children’s hospital. The grounds were later used to house prisoners of war, they were put inside small huts, where they remained until 1948.These very huts where then used again in 1951 when there was a shortage of civilian housing, families lived on these grounds until houses were found for them and many said once they left, they wished to return to the open grounds with its scenic views. It was most recently used by the council as space for offices, its since been abandoned and emptied. Although so much has changed, the original architecture which remains allows us to imagine it as it was 171 years ago.
