In this video we’ll be looking at Kawai’s new CA49. People have been requesting this video for a while since the CA49 technically came out several months ago. We only very recently got our hands on one as demand far exceeded supply, so we’re excited to see exactly what’s been improved over the popular previous generation’s CA48. If this is your first time to the channel, please subscribe and hit the notification bell! Piano Sound: Looking through the specs sheet on the CA49, you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually looking at the CN29 spec sheet, as they have a whole lot in common, especially with regards to the sound engine. Like the CN29, the CA49 uses Kawai’s Progressive Harmonic Imaging (PHI) Sound Engine, with 192 note polyphony and 19 total on-board sounds. One of the most interesting things with many of Kawai’s recent digital pianos is the collaboration with Onkyo - a high end Japanese audio company. The collaboration with Onkyo has improved the signal processing, amplifier quality and speaker quality on Kawai’s recent digital pianos. You can definitely hear that the CA49 sounds punchier and cleaner than the CA48. In terms of the power output, the CA49 has 40 watts of speaker power also like the CN29, but where the 29 only has two speakers, the 49 has four. This adds an extra layer of clarity to the tone. As far as the actual piano samples go, the CA49 is equipped with both the SKEX and EX grand sample sets. Both sets are 88 note multi dimensional/individually sampled, which is fairly uncommon in the price range (typically, every few notes are sampled and the pitches are adjusted via stretch tuning.) Individual sampling allows for significantly more nuance and subtlety of tone. These two samples are the crown jewels of this tone engine. Both are rich, complex piano sounds, which is important since this instrument is offered as a lower cost and headphone friendly alternative to an upright piano, whether as a primary instrument for learning, or as a secondary practice instrument. Piano Action: The action is the most significant departure from the CN29 as the CA49 features Kawai’s upgraded Grand Feel Compact. It’s got Compact in the title as it’s essentially a shortened version of the Grand Feel action that’s been featured in the higher level CA series pianos for several years now. This action does a very good job of replicating the feel of an acoustic piano action. The action itself features wooden key sticks, with ivory and matte textures on the key tops, along with a triple sensor, let-off and bass range counterweights. How important the action is to you will probably be the biggest determining factor in whether you go with the CA49 or CN29, since while the CN29 does feature a great action, it’s plastic as opposed to wood. Piano Features/Connectivity In terms of connectivity, the CA49 is a little bit light compared to the upper level CA products. Since the CA49 is designed to deliver an instrument with a wood action, high quality sound engine and 4 speaker system for as low as price as possible, some sacrifices are made when it comes to areas like connectivity. The CA49 has two headphone jacks, MIDI in and out, USB to host and Bluetooth MIDI. There’s an internal 3 song recorder, which is a nice practice aid, along with a whole bunch of pre-loaded repertoire books. All of the basics, such as metronome and transpose are covered as well. Also worth highlighting is the new and improved user interface. This is another nice upgrade over the CA48 as the new interface looks better and is easier to use. As far as finishes go, the CA49 is available in Premium Rosewood, Satin Black and even a Satin White. The cabinets are much more robust and elegant than the CA48 as well. The CA49 comes standard with Kawai’s integrated Grand Feel pedal system. Thanks so much for watching!
